Before we started cooking for our precious Annie, we would spend upwards of $60 a month for a popular dog food delivery service, which doesn't include extra treats for good behavior. So, when a friend suggested we try making homemade dog food and the cost savings associated, I had to give it a try. The first recipe we had in mind came from favorite dog food delivery service.

This recipe is an absolute staple at our house. It's simple to make and goes terrific with a pump of our favorite salmon oil for boost of omega-3 and 6 fatty acids. Recipe consists mainly of 3 parts: good lean proteins, vegetables, and healthy and fibrous grains. We feed Annie this recipe regularly; alternating batches with ground beef and chicken from time to time.

The Standard Mash (Turkey, Vegetable, Grain)

  • COOKING PROCESS: Quick stir-fry
  • RECIPE: Staple Turkey Grain Vegetable
  • DIFFICULTY: Easy
  • COOKING TIME: 30 MINS

WHAT YOU NEED:

1 1/2 cups oatmeal or brown rice

1 tablespoon olive oil

3 pounds ground turkey or beef

3 cups spinach or kale, chopped

1/2 cup peas, canned or frozen

1 1/2 cups oatmeal or brown rice

1 tablespoon olive oil

3 pounds ground turkey or beef

3 cups spinach or kale, chopped

1/2 cup peas, canned or frozen

DIRECTIONS:

Step 1: In a large saucepan of 3 cups water, cook rice according to package instructions; set aside.

Step 2: Heat olive oil in a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add ground turkey and cook until browned, about 3-5 minutes, making sure to crumble the turkey as it cooks.

Step 3: Stir in chopped kale, carrots, zucchini, peas and oatmeal or brown rice until the spinach has wilted and the mixture is heated through, about 3-5 minutes.

Step 4: Let cool completely. Mix in a squirt of salmon oil for a boost of nutrients and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids
